I was born in Hong Kong and came to Singapore with my husband over 30 years ago. We helped out in a relative’s jewellery business. I’ve lived in Whampoa since. We’ve been retired for several years. We don’t have any children and chose to move into this new flat for seniors after selling our earlier home. I like Singapore. The government takes care of Singaporeans and is attentive to all the needs. I don’t think this is possible in Hong Kong, especially now. I still visit my relatives in Hong Kong every year, except this year because of the virus. It does not make sense having to quarantine for 14 days when I arrive and to do the same when I returned to Singapore. This vase belongs to my aunt, who was the sister of my mother’s father. She was unmarried and worked as a Ma Jie (domestic helper) for a foreigner in Hong Kong. My mother passed this vase to me. I consulted a company and was told the vase is a few hundred years old. Even though it is very old, I don’t think it has a historical value. That’s what my mother told me. I kept the vase as a display piece in my old home and moved it here when I relocated to this flat. It has remined as a memorial piece for me.
